Massacre Bay Beach House
On a large family retreat on Orcas Island with several houses, there was a small beachside cabin. This cabin was slated for demolition, but due to its nonconforming proximity to the protected shoreline, it was renovated as a guest house. Through the act of saving this remnant of the history of an old camp, the family compound is imbued with the spirit of simplicity at the place of arrival. A new corner window, overlooking the bay, transforms the old cabin by means of a change in scale. A new stone fireplace, built from native fieldstones, is the center of gravity of the cabin.
